Station carved into rock and connected to a growing green district

Vækerø Station
Oslo, Norway

Gottlieb Paludan Architects has won the competition to design Vækerø Station on the Fornebu rail line in Oslo, in association with L2 Arkitekter.

Vækerø Station is located inside a mountain and the design is, therefore, based on the relationship between nature and the new infrastructure represented by the Metro. The station is built as a long, continuous connection between to entrances designed to reproduce the experience of going into and through the mountain.

From one high-lying entrance to the other close to the Oslofjord, the station is interlinked by a sky of golden metal, which creates cohesion and identity for the station. Universal design, intuitive orientation and good accessibility have been prioritized from the outset and characterizes the whole project. The entrances are large enough and inward sloping so as to create a good visual contact between platform and entrance, thereby inviting daylight down onto the platform. The large platform width allows for a natural division of the surface into an active part near the edge and a passive part in the middle.

The quiet, suburban location will always be characteristic of Vækerø, however, urban development along the fjord will result in many more passengers in the future.
