Renovation and modernization of Copenhagen's busiest transport hub

Metro & Railway

Nørreport Station
Copenhagen, Denmark

Nørreport Station is Denmark's busiest station and, after the renovation, it stands as a well-functioning station in an urban space with good flow and a high, urban pulse.

The conditions for pedestrians and cyclists have generally been prioritized through the reorganization and reduction of car traffic. The key values are urban life, passenger flow, readability, and accessibility.

The project has included three sub-projects: the urban space project with a new design of the station square (station buildings, pavements, lighting, bicycle parking, access, and traffic conditions), modernization work on the long-distance train platform, and concrete renovation of the bridge structures that support the entire ground deck above the station.

Everyone should be able to move through our shared public spaces and buildings in a safe and dignified way. In complex environments such as stations, terminals, and other public transport hubs, universal design is not just a feature – it’s a fundamental design principle that ensures equal access and high functionality for all, regardless of physical or cognitive ability.

Udforsk

Cycling plays a vital role in the cities of tomorrow. It offers a smart response to urban congestion, pollution, and sedentary lifestyles — while strengthening mobility in both city centers and surrounding areas. A well-designed cycling environment makes it easy to choose the bike for everyday travel and connects key functions across the urban landscape.

Architecture leaves a lasting mark. When we work with existing buildings, we take on a responsibility – for the resources, for our architectural heritage, and for creating solutions that stand the test of time. Transformation is about breathing new life into the built environment and identifying new purposes for structures that no longer meet current needs. It demands insight, care and a long-term perspective on climate, economy and social value.

Lighting is an indispensable part of our daily lives. It shapes the environments in which we live and work, and has a significant impact on our well-being. When the lighting is right, it supports our activities, creates a sense of security, and enhances the visual experience of the spaces we inhabit. This is why it is crucial that lighting design is planned with care and insight to support both function and aesthetics in our spaces and buildings.
