Snekkersten Waterworks
Snekkersten, Danmark

Forsyning Helsingør has built a new Snekkersten Waterworks, which contains a new facility and invites citizens inside for a story about water. Gottlieb Paludan Architects are the architects behind the new waterworks. The building and process plant were designed in 2018 and completed in 2020.

The waterworks is organized into a technical wing and a visitor and staff wing. The process plant is symmetrically designed and located in a cubic building with Corten steel facades rising above the low concrete wing. Towards Øresund, a large window section provides a view of the tanks, while water hydrants along the facade and visible roof drains also contribute to the narrative about water.

Utilization of the terrain

The new waterworks is established on an elevated site that slopes down towards the Øresund, and the terrain is used to incorporate the large clean water tanks so that they appear smaller and reflect the natural gravity of water. Towards the Øresund, a large window section is established that provides a view of the tanks, while hydrants along the facade and visible roof drains also contribute to the water narrative.

The 1,700 m2 waterworks is organized into a technical wing and a visitor and crew wing.

The process plant is symmetrically constructed in a cubic building with facades of rust-red Corten steel plates rising above the low concrete wing.

Snekkersten Waterworks is intended to play an educational role in Helsingør Municipality and therefore learning hotspots have been built in several places in the architecture, allowing the public to get close to the processes the water goes through, both inside and outside the waterworks.

See our Specialist Knowledge

Our cities and landscapes must accommodate a wide range of functions, interests, and concerns – from urban development and infrastructure to nature conservation and climate adaptation. This places high demands on the prioritization, planning, and siting of new developments and structures. Urban and landscape analyses provide a comprehensive overview of physical, regulatory, and contextual conditions and form a critical basis for decision-making in the early project stages.
