Visionary water works conveys the story of the water cycle

Køge Waterworks
Køge, Denmark

Gottlieb Paludan Architects is the lead consultant on the architectural framework for the future drinking water supply for KLAR Forsyning in Køge.

The project includes a test center and a new waterworks.

All functions are gathered in one transparent building structure at the highest point of the site. The functions are organized so that they are visible and readable both from the inside and the outside.

A large, sloping roof directs rainwater to the lower part of the site. An existing lake is expanded into a rainwater basin, which in case of extreme rainfall is also capable of receiving surface water from the surrounding terrain. The facility is designed with optimal protection of drinking water during cloudbursts in mind.

Communicating the process of water treatment and the water cycle

The test center allows the public to get close to the processes the water undergoes, both inside and outside the waterworks. The new water house is conceived as an outward-facing utility facility that will create attractive workplaces and add value to the local area through safe water treatment and the communication of the water cycle story from rainwater to groundwater to clean and safe drinking water.

Together we create cohesion

Køge Waterworks combines advanced technology and architectural quality to ensure the future of drinking water supply. Through visionary design, the facility illustrates the water cycle, protecting the local community and environment from challenges such as extreme rainfall.

Challenge

The primary challenge of the project was to develop a waterworks that not only guarantees clean drinking water but also serves as an educational platform for the water cycle. Additionally, the facility needed to address climate challenges like extreme rainfall and adhere to strict operational reliability standards.

Method

Gottlieb Paludan Architects consolidated all functions into a transparent building located at the highest point of the site, making the processes visible from both inside and outside. Rainwater management was integrated with a sloped roof that channels water to a retention basin. The project team worked closely with specialists and tested solutions to create a building that blends functionality with aesthetic appeal.

Impact

Køge Waterworks provides both functional and experiential value. Its test center enables the public to observe the water's journey from rain to drinking water, raising awareness about the importance of water resources. Additionally, the facility delivers a robust and climate-adapted solution, ensuring a secure drinking water supply for the local community in the years to come.

Specialist Knowledge

Our employees master a wide range of specialised knowledge that is applied across different projects and sectors.

See our Specialist Knowledge

Critical infrastructure encompasses the systems and structures essential to the functioning of our society. These may support economic or social functions, such as health, transport, energy, information, food supply, or security, and architecture plays a central role in many of these domains. When buildings that support critical functions fail to operate, the consequences extend beyond the site itself, potentially compromising public safety or interrupting access to vital resources.

Udforsk

Heavy rainfall events are becoming more frequent, presenting growing challenges for cities to manage stormwater effectively. Traditional approaches such as expanding sewer networks are no longer sufficient, making alternative solutions like Sustainable Urban Drainage Systems (SUDS) a necessity. This approach enables water to be managed on the surface while simultaneously reshaping the terrain of cities and landscapes.
