Bridges

Bridges are essential connections in the built infrastructure. They enable mobility, link neighborhoods and landscapes, and contribute to the coherence of transportation networks and public spaces. In addition to their role as traffic routes, bridges also influence the architectural and experiential quality of their surroundings. Therefore, bridge design requires both technical expertise and an understanding of the site's character and the users' needs.

Balance between form and function

At Gottlieb Paludan Architects, we approach bridge design as an interdisciplinary discipline, where architectural concepts and technical solutions are developed in close relation to each other. We emphasize simplicity in the design, high functionality, and respect for the surroundings – whether it’s a pedestrian bridge in an urban context or a larger infrastructure connection.

Scalable design rooted in context

A well-designed bridge must function technically and aesthetically – creating value both as a connection and as part of the greater whole. We view the bridge as part of its context and aim for solutions that balance functional requirements with a simple, clear architectural expression.

We design bridges in all scales and environments: from pedestrian and cycle bridges in urban settings to larger connections spanning landscapes and bodies of water. Buildability, operation, and adaptability are central considerations in our work, and we develop designs that can accommodate changes throughout the project’s process – without compromising on the architectural vision.

Gottlieb Paludan Architects has been behind projects such as Byens Bro in Odense, the Funder Ådal Motorway Bridge, pedestrian bridges in Tyresta National Park in Sweden, and bridges for Network Rail in the UK.

A holistic approach

We view the work of architects and engineers as two sides of the same coin and prioritize close interdisciplinary collaboration throughout the design and planning phases. It is within this integrated approach that we create robust, long-lasting solutions – with attention to both functionality, design, and the overall user experience.
