Bridge in Tyresta National Park, Sweden
Tyresta, Sweden

Gottlieb Paludan Architects has won the competition to design new arrival facilities and a new footbridge for a 1,970-hectare national park located southeast of Stockholm.

In the competition, Tyresö Municipality requested a bridge that respects the area's unspoiled nature. The new main entrance to Tyresta National Park begins a journey through a landscape that transitions from cultural landscape to increasingly untouched natural areas with primeval forest, and the bridge over Nyforsviken is to be an integral part of the natural progression through the national park. The design therefore subordinates itself to the surrounding nature and is based on a detailed and thorough understanding of the existing qualities.

The 90-meter-long bridge over Nyforsviken was completed in 2023 and now serves as a northern entrance to the national park and is an integral part of the natural progression through the park. The bridge is designed with a straight alignment without supports and constructed with pre-tensioned tie rods drilled into the rock, stabilized by concrete bridge sections, while the railing is made of stainless steel – robust materials that ensure minimal material consumption and long lifespan. The new arrival facilities include a larger main entrance from the west and a smaller entrance from the east. The arrival at the main entrance offers parking spaces for cars, motorcycles, tourist buses, etc., and is connected to a new information plaza and a network of trails, including one of Sweden's longest hiking trails, Sörmlandsleden. The arrival from the east occurs through an open cultural landscape, and here the parking area is designed for cars and bicycles, and is adjacent to a small cluster of older buildings, including Alby Friluftsgård and the Rectory.

Everyone should be able to move through our shared public spaces and buildings in a safe and dignified way. In complex environments such as stations, terminals, and other public transport hubs, universal design is not just a feature – it’s a fundamental design principle that ensures equal access and high functionality for all, regardless of physical or cognitive ability.

Udforsk

Bridges are essential connections in the built infrastructure. They enable mobility, link neighborhoods and landscapes, and contribute to the coherence of transportation networks and public spaces. In addition to their role as traffic routes, bridges also influence the architectural and experiential quality of their surroundings. Therefore, bridge design requires both technical expertise and an understanding of the site's character and the users' needs.
