Energy Landscapes

The expansion of renewable energy and the electrification of society are placing new demands on our landscapes. Large-scale infrastructure such as data centres, solar parks and Power-to-X facilities are becoming integrated components of our energy system—and, consequently, of the landscapes that surround us. At Gottlieb Paludan Architects, we work purposefully to integrate these technical structures in ways that generate value for clients, communities and nature alike.

Energy infrastructure as part of the landscape narrative

Our approach to energy landscapes is founded on the ambition to unify technical, spatial and societal considerations in a holistic and coherent manner. We view rural landscapes not merely as passive backdrops for infrastructure, but as active resources with the potential to support nature, recreation and local development. When thoughtfully planned and sited, energy facilities can contribute positively to the identity and functionality of the landscape. Our work focuses on enhancing the existing qualities of the landscape while ensuring the operational needs of the facilities. We often integrate wetlands, woodland corridors and path connections to create ecological and recreational value. We advise on biodiversity, groundwater protection and alignment with local development goals - ensuring that energy infrastructure becomes an active part of the landscape’s ecological and experiential networks.

A complex field with high demands

Designing energy landscapes requires deep professional insight and strong interdisciplinary coordination. These facilities are often technically complex and subject to strict requirements for security, operational efficiency and future adaptability. At the same time, they must be sited in sensitive natural and cultural contexts and realised in close dialogue with authorities, neighbours and local communities.

At Gottlieb Paludan Architects, we combine technical understanding with architectural and landscape expertise to deliver resilient, well-integrated solutions. We provide advisory services throughout all project phases - from early planning and stakeholder dialogue to concept design, detailed design and landscape development.

We conduct landscape analyses and impact assessments to evaluate the visual, functional and environmental effects of a project. Through strategic planning and scenario-based design, we explore how energy facilities can actively contribute to their surroundings—for example, through stormwater management, ecological restoration, recreational access or biodiversity enhancement.

We utilise digital tools, including 3D BIM and virtual reality, to support authority dialogue, strengthen visual communication and ensure a high level of documentation throughout the design process. Our aim is to create energy infrastructure that contributes positively to landscape, community and climate - and is built to last.
