Expansion of a combined heat and power plant

Energy & Industry

Värteverket
Stockholm, Sweden

Gottlieb Paludan Architects has built Sweden's largest biomass-fired power plant, centrally located in Stockholm.

The major expansion of Värtaverket must take into account neighbors, respect the planting of protected oak trees and the area's function as a wildlife passage between the northern and southern parts of Djurgården. These considerations mean, among other things, that alternatives to fuel transportation by truck have had to be found. Part of the facility is therefore placed underground and fuel is brought to the facility through tunnels directly from the nearby port, Värtahamnen.

A facade in brick

The part of the plant located on the ground is built into a well-insulated, sound-absorbing facade. The facade is clad with brick elements, a nod to several old industrial buildings of high architectural value in the area. The facade with the vertical brick slats follows the layout of the facility, but is arranged so that this can be adjusted without compromising the architectural concept. Thus, it will be possible to make changes to the technical configurations while maintaining the homogeneous appearance of the building.

See our Specialist Knowledge
