Listed and historic buildings hold architectural and cultural heritage values that give them a distinct significance in our built environment. They reflect the craftsmanship, aesthetics, and societal conditions of earlier times, while also offering unique and contemporary settings for life, work, and experience. But with these great qualities come special considerations and requirements, making work on listed buildings a complex and highly specialised discipline.

Tietgensgade Cooling Central
Copenhagen, Denmark
In the old Vestre Elektricitetsværk, Gottlieb Paludan Architects has designed and planned a district cooling plant and a new district office for HOFOR. The architectural language of the Tietgensgade facility is a conglomerate of different eras' interpretation of the red brickwork as a framework for a technical program.
As part of the efforts to supply large Copenhagen companies with energy-efficient cooling, one of Copenhagen's first power plants has been converted and expanded into a cooling center. The district cooling plant has a capacity of 18 mW and supplies Copenhagen City Hall, the House of Industry and the National Archives with environmentally friendly cooling produced using water from the Port of Copenhagen.
In the interior of the building, original spaces are recreated and a number of new ones are created. To make room for the cooling center, parts of the existing buildings are elevated, creating a new, characteristic recessed masonry extension. The new building elements blend in with the other historical layers of the building complex without much fuss. The district office facilities include workshops, storage, changing rooms and showers for 30 people, a canteen for 40 people and 12 office workstations with associated meeting facilities.
