Linnésgade and Rømersgade
Copenhagen, Denmark

Gottlieb Paludan Architects has been responsible for renewing Linnésgade and Rømersgade in Copenhagen with a focus on better conditions for cyclists and pedestrians. Gottlieb Paludan Architects have been the architects for the future Rømersgade and Linnésgade, and handled all work above ground.

The ambition of the project was to create an attractive green, urban street space with room for the many cyclists, shoppers and motorists who use the streets, Torvehallerne and Israels Plads daily.

In the two streets, parking lots have been closed and the space utilized to create greener urban spaces with bicycle parking and space for stopping, pedestrians and cyclists. These elements also act as a speed-reducing element for car traffic, and the approximately 150 new bicycle parking spaces are organized to achieve a better flow for pedestrians.

The city's green connections

The new road geometry also directs rainwater away from the road. The two green streets create a connection between two of the city's large green areas, Ørstedsparken and the Botanical Gardens. This clarifies both the city's green connections and the site's historical character as part of the fortress ring. Similar construction work has also been carried out on Vendersgade, where the physical layout of the street also signals that it is predominantly for pedestrians.

Cycling plays a vital role in the cities of tomorrow. It offers a smart response to urban congestion, pollution, and sedentary lifestyles — while strengthening mobility in both city centers and surrounding areas. A well-designed cycling environment makes it easy to choose the bike for everyday travel and connects key functions across the urban landscape.

Everyone should be able to move through our shared public spaces and buildings in a safe and dignified way. In complex environments such as stations, terminals, and other public transport hubs, universal design is not just a feature – it’s a fundamental design principle that ensures equal access and high functionality for all, regardless of physical or cognitive ability.
