Everyone should be able to move through our shared public spaces and buildings in a safe and dignified way. In complex environments such as stations, terminals, and other public transport hubs, universal design is not just a feature – it’s a fundamental design principle that ensures equal access and high functionality for all, regardless of physical or cognitive ability.

Competition proposal for new bicycle parking facility in Hamburg
Hamburg, Germany
Gottlieb Paludan Architects developed a competition proposal for a new bicycle parking garage in Harburg in the German state of Hamburg. The parking garage had to fit into a tight space at a local traffic junction and at the same time appear as a transparent and inviting facility for cyclists.
The competition includes the design of a 2,000 m2 bicycle parking garage with space for a total of 1,200 bicycles - 600 bicycles in the first realization phase and another 600 in the second phase. The parking garage will be partially underground near a traffic hub and connected to the Hamburg underground. In addition to parking spaces, the new building will also house other bicycle-related facilities, such as a car wash, workshop, bike shop and office with associated living, toilet and shower facilities.
