District Cooling Plant in Borgergade: Harmonious Integration of Technology and Aesthetics

Borgergade District Cooling Plant
Copenhagen, Denmark

Hofor's district cooling plant in Borgergade is located on the site of a former power plant, which for a number of years was used as a theater stage under the name Turbinehallerne. The closed building expression of the cooling center reflects its location in the inner city of Copenhagen, surrounded by homes and offices. The technical plant is noisy and the building's design and detailing is very much based on dealing with this challenge.

The cooling center is a discreet and simple building in red brick, which is characteristic of many of the early industrialist buildings in the same area. The formally subdued building is adorned with decorative brickwork, with every second course of the long brick facade stepped back - so-called recess brickwork. District cooling has the same benefits for consumers as district heating: Secure supply, environmental optimization and independence from their own installations. In addition, centralized systems avoid noisy and unsightly units in the urban environment.

Energy-efficient district cooling in Copenhagen

District cooling is delivered through highly insulated pipes from cooling centers located in the city near large consumers. In the cooling center, the circulating water is cooled according to three principles: during the cold winter months, so-called free cooling is taken from the water in the Copenhagen harbor. When the need for cooling increases, excess district heating is used for absorption cooling. During the hottest times, traditional, electrically powered cooling units are used. The latter technique is the most common in any cooling system and also the most energy-intensive.

Borgergade district cooling center resumes an interrupted tradition of using high-quality brickwork, also for utility buildings.
