Designing new bicycle parking basement under Lyngby Station

Bicycle parking facility, Lyngby Station
Lyngby, Denmark

Gottlieb Paludan Architects are the architects behind the design of the new bicycle parking garage under Lyngby Station. The parking garage, which has parking for 870 bicycles, will relieve the access areas around Lyngby Station, which until now have been dominated by randomly parked bicycles.

With direct access from the bicycle parking basement to the platforms, the goal is also that the new parking basement will make cycling more attractive and combine cycling with trains and buses, thus helping to relieve car traffic in central Lyngby-Taarbæk.

Bicycle parking basement with focus on safety and functionality

Gottlieb Paludan Architects redesigned the basement to function as a bicycle parking basement. This involved demolishing heavy concrete structures for the platform and main entrance, renovating all surfaces, optimizing wayfinding and preparing the connection to the future light rail. To create maximum safety for users, the basement is equipped with camera surveillance, a specially designed light fixture with bright light and loud classical music. In addition, there is a pump, charging stations for electric bikes and information screens. Lyngby Station is one of the most used stations in the metropolitan area with approximately 35,000 travelers. This number is expected to increase in connection with the upcoming light rail.
