Control and Maintenance Centre for the Upcoming M5 Metro Line

As sub-consultant in a joint venture between Ramboll and SYSTRA, Gottlieb Paludan Architects will assist The Copenhagen Metro with architectural consultancy for the transport system of Copenhagen’s potential new metro line, M5. The primary architectural task involves designing a new control and maintenance centre at Prøvestenen.

The control and maintenance centre, a critical component of the metro system's operations, must not only meet the highest technical and functional standards but also reflect Metroselskabet's climate ambitions. Metroselskabet aims to reduce the climate impact of the new metro line by 50% compared to previous lines; hence, the development of sustainable solutions is a central part of the task. Focusing on climate, functionality, and aesthetics, the centre must provide optimal conditions for the operation and maintenance of the metro trains for the new line. The landscape treatment of the site will particularly emphasise enhancing biodiversity in the area.

The M5 Line is a new, independent metro line with up to 10 stations, which can be constructed in phases from either the south or the north. The line extends from Copenhagen Central Station via Islands Brygge, Amagerbrogade, and Refshaleøen to Lynetteholm and Østerport. M5 will strengthen public transport in the city and help to connect Copenhagen's districts more closely. The southern solution can help to address capacity challenges in the current metro across the harbour. Metro line M5 is expected to open in 2035.

Gottlieb Paludan Architects have over time undertaken several tasks for The Copenhagen Metro —most recently the stations on the Sydhavn Metro and Copenhagen South, both of which opened in the summer of 2024.

Copenhagen Central Station is being modernised and future-proofed

The project will create greater safety and better accessibility for travellers, which is why the station hall will be transformed to make it more manageable and the historic architecture more visible.
